Cannes Film Festival 2019, the 10 most anticipated films

Perhaps the largest cultural events on the planet, the Cannes Film Festival brings in annual sales of around 200 million euros. Many are the stars of the cinema that goes there. As it is difficult for these celebrities to fly on an airliner without being continually disturbed by other passengers seeking autographs or selfie, there will be many private planes that will land at Cannes for the festival.

Just a few days before the start of the 72nd edition of the most prestigious film festival in the world, now is the time to study the program and try to imagine the films we are going to talk about and discuss throughout the rest of the year.

We will limit ourselves here to mention only the 10 most anticipated films based on the plot, the casting and especially the directors.

  1. ONCE   UPON A TIME IN… HOLLYWOOD

Once upon a time in … Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino’s new film, will be world premiere on May 21st, exactly 25 years after Pulp Fiction, or the most courageous and innovative gold medal of the 30 last years. A film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie (plus half the system of Hollywood stars, including Al Pacino), taking place in the 70s and featuring the cinema itself.

  1. MEKTOUB, MY LOVE: INTERMEZZO

Second position for the new film by Abdellatif Kechiche, this Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo, which is proposed from the title as the central chapter of a trilogy that began two years ago at the Venice exhibition. After the Golden Palm of The Life of Adele, the French director is also trying to make the history of the festival.

  1. THE DEAD DO NOT DIE

So we come to the podium and in particular to the opening film of the festival: The Dead Do not Die of Jim Jarmusch. The very rich cast (Adam Driver, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Steve Buscemi and many others) as well as the theme of the zombies, declaimed with so much irony, immediately made a cult of the trailer.

  1. HIDDEN LIFE

The film tells the true story of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian objector who refused to fight for the Nazis during the Second World War and was executed in 1943.

  1. MATTHIAS AND MAXIME

It is indeed the new film of the very talented young Xavier Dolan, the Dutch director returns to turn (and play) in French, and in Quebec, the story of a group of friends who meet again after several years.

  1. THE TRAITOR

The only Italian film in competition, Marco Bellocchio’s Traitor tells the story of Tommaso Buscetta, or the first great repented of the Sicilian mafia.

  1. PARASITE (GISAENGCHUNG)

After a few films in the United States (Snowpiercer and Okja), the extraordinary Korean director Bong Joon-ho returns to his country (and Cannes) with Parasite (Gisaengchung), which tells the story of a poor boy who, with his family, becomes obsessed with the lives of rich neighbors.

  1. ROCKETMAN

After the success of Bohemian Rhapsody, the attention to music biographies is very high, and many people are betting that the next golden vein of Hollywood is exactly that one. So it’s not surprising that this Rocketman, presented in Cannes out of competition in the presence of the British rock star, Elton John, arouses so much curiosity and attention in the media.

  1. LITTLE JOE

Another beginning in the main competitive section for an author who has convinced us and marveled at several times over the past decade. We are talking about the Austrian Jessica Hausner, former director and screenwriter of Lourdes and Amour Fou, who with this Little Joe seems to change completely gender, since the plot tells the story of a plant artificially created from genetics which begins to alter the personality of humans and animals it has contacted. British actors see among the protagonists Emily Beecham and Ben Whishaw.

  1. INVASION OF BEARS IN SICILY

The famous bear invasion in Sicily is a mixed animation film co-produced by Italy and France. Like the novel of the same name by Dino Buzzati from which it is drawn, the story tells the story of a group of bears who, in search of food during a particularly cold winter, decide to invade the Grand Duchy of Sicily.
